How to Draw An Octagon Step by Step

Step 1

You will need patience and a ruler to follow this tutorial on how you can draw an Octagon. Instead of drawing a simple Octagon, we will make it out of several smaller triangles.

This is why it’s so easy to have a ruler that matches this guide. This is the first step. You’ll need to draw the two smaller shapes.

It can be difficult to locate all these triangles. You can use a pencil first, and then want to write it using a pen once you are satisfied with the shape.

You can use a square or other tool to draw triangles of equal size if you are really stuck.

Additionally, each triangle’s vertex should be ‘cut’ to create a small flat side at its top.

Although it may sound confusing, the reference image will help you see what it looks like.

Step 2 – Next add two triangles to make an octagon.
You will need to add two triangles to the second part of your octagon drawing.

You were warned that this drawing would take patience. We will show you why in the next step.

This is the most difficult part of the whole drawing.

Step 3: Now draw more triangles
This tutorial will show you how to draw an Octagon!

You will continue with the previous steps, but add two triangles to the third step.

Refer to the reference image for guidance on where you should position these triangles. This is it! You’re now ready to move on to the next step.

Step 4 – Next draw two more triangles
Here’s what you can expect for your octagonal design! We will add another triangle to the shape as we go along.

This step is different from the previous because we won’t be adding two triangles to our equation, but instead, we will be adding one. This will be placed on the left side, into the top of that gap.

This will leave only a slight gap. But we’ll make up for it in the next step!

Step 5: Draw the final triangle
In the previous step, we covered one more gap. We’ll now address that! To fill the gap, all you have to do is draw one more triangle.

You have completed your octagon. There are some things you can do before moving to the next step.

You can add a few lines to the triangles to create a larger shape than eight.

To create an even larger collection of patterns and shapes, you can add lines and shapes!

You might even be able to incorporate the octagon in a logo or add texture marks.

This second idea can make the octagon appear like it is made of wood or other materials. These are just some ideas. Get creative and see what comes up!

Step 6 – Now, add some color to your octagonal design
This is the end of your octagonal design! You’re now ready to add all the lines, shapes, and other elements that you desire, and then it’s time for some amazing colors.

We used a different color for each shape in our reference image. This is only one way to colorize images. You can unleash your creativity with this step!
