When you are ready to draw an elephant, you need to think about the shape of the elephant. Elephants are big and fat, and they have long legs. The front legs are a bit shorter than the back legs, and the head is small. The ears are long and they stick up. The trunk is long and it can pick up things. The tail is long and it can swish back and forth.
If you look at the picture, you can see the trunk, ears, and tail. The back legs are a bit shorter than the front legs and they are a bit further away from the body. The body is long and the head is small.

In this tutorial I will show you how to draw an African elephant step by step from scratch. This tutorial is ideal for beginners. You’ll learn how to plan the pose, how to achieve the correct proportions, and how to add all the body parts and their details. It’s not as difficult as it seems!

How to Draw an Elephant Step by Step

  • Begin by drawing a large oval for the elephant’s body and then add a smaller circle for the head.
  • Now draw two long, curving lines, coming down from the head for the trunk. Join them at the end.
  • Draw a tusk coming from the bottom of your elephant’s head, curving across the trunk. Add the tip of the other tusk to the left of the trunk.
  • Erase the overlapping lines inside the trunk and tusk. Draw the ear.
  • Erase the overlapping lines in the ear. Draw two sets of ovals for the legs, and add semicircles at the bottom for the feet.
  • Erase the overlapping lines and smooth out where the different shapes join. Add the other two legs.
  • Erase the overlapping lines in the second set of legs, and smooth out where the different shapes join. Now add a tail. Try to copy the shape shown here as closely as you can.
  • Add lines for wrinkles on your elephant’s trunk, ear, knees and tummy. Give the ear a wiggly edge, add toenail shapes to the feet and give your elephant an eye and lower lip.
