This step-by-step tutorial shows what it takes to draw an anime character’s facial features and head. It demonstrates the drawing of facial characteristics using normal proportions in anime and also how to position their head on top. It also provides basics for shading and coloring.
The illustration of the boy featured in this tutorial is about 10 years old. However, when it comes to anime, older characters may often depict looks that are younger. Therefore, this kind of character could be used to draw students in high school.
Keep in mind that there isn’t a standard method to draw anime characters. The proportions and positioning of facial features differ significantly based on the styles and preferences of the artist.
The purpose of this tutorial is to give general guidelines to draw manga or anime facial features. They could be extremely helpful when you’re trying to learn how to draw according to the fashion.
If you’re planning to be following the guideline with a pencil and paper, be certain to draw very thin lines during the first steps to allow you to quickly erase various parts of the drawing should you need to.
If you’re drawing digitally the options you have will be determined by the software you use.

Step 1 – Structuring the Boy’s Head
Because we’re drawing a male head, we’ll want to draw a round face since a longer face makes the character appear older.
For drawing the head in the front view, first, draw an upwards line to aid in ensuring you have both sides equally. The top part of your head should be drawn to a half-circle, and from the bottom draw two lines in the direction of one another. Draw a second pair of lines from the lines, which will join to create the chin.
For drawing the view from the sides of your head, draw on the face’s upper part to an oval and then draw the jaw/nose area over the oval.
In drawing the side view of the head of the boy, make sure to avoid drawing lips in the sketch your first draw. You could also think about where the nose will be. To ensure that the nose is properly placed, you should refer to step four in the instruction.

Step 2 – Drawing the Boy’s Ears
To put the ears in the correct position make a horizontal line in the center of your head. Then, between this line and your chin, draw another line horizontally. The ears will roughly equal to what is the difference between these lines.
Note the real ears sit higher than the head, however since we’re drawing an anime-style boy rather than a real boy, we will draw different proportions.
Step 3 – Drawing the Boy’s Eyes
To draw eyes, you will need to draw a horizontal line running through the center of your head. Draw the eyes just beneath this line.
It is important to note that real eyes are drawn to this line, or even above it. The characters in anime usually draw their eyes further down the face.
Because we are drawing a boy, the eyes must be broad (tall). Wider and bigger eyes make a character appear younger. appearance.
Draw your eyebrows slightly higher than the eyes. Also, you can draw a hint of your eyelids that are between the eyebrows and the eyes.

Step 4 – Drawing the Boy’s Nose
To position, the nose, draw a second horizontal line across the vertical line that runs halfway between the facial area and the chin. Draw the nose over the line.
Remember the fact that actual noses sit than the face. However, anime noses can be drawn further down when drawing characters with huge big eyes.

Step 5 – Drawing the Boy’s Mouth
For drawing the mouth, draw another horizontal line in between the line that is used for the nose and cheeks. However, instead of drawing your mouth straight on this line, you should draw it slightly higher. The reason is this line will give you the location of the lower lip, that in anime is often not drawn.

Step 6 – Drawing the Boy’s Hair
There are many ways to draw anime hair, generally, hair is drawn in rather massive clusters. In this example, we’ll draw a messy hairstyle.

Step 7 – Cleaning Up the Drawing
When all facial features have been placed and you’ve finished drawing the hair, you can clean all of the guidelines, and erase any areas of the head covered by hair. It is possible to cover your drawing with a larger stroke or use darker lines.
After you’re done, you should have a crisp and neat outline of the head of an anime boy and face.
Step 8 – Anime Style Color & Shading
The technique of shading used in animation and other cartoons is known as “Cel Shading”. It’s simply a kind of shading in which there is no gradient but only a sharp line that separates the normal and shaded regions.
In this tutorial, we’ll apply extremely generalized shading. This means that we will shade areas where the majority of lighting conditions are dark. In this case, it will comprise the neck as well as the lower edges of the hair that curl inwards towards the face.
There is also the option of adding drop shadows from the eyelashes, hair, and even the shaded area on the opposite face side (generally it should be the opposite to where the light source is).
The most bright areas are reflections from the eyes as well as highlights on the hair. You could decide to leave them completely white or light shade them.
To shade and color the drawing, first, applies each section with its color of choice and add the shade on the top. If you are drawing on paper leave the highlights/reflections white. If you’re drawing digitally, include them after filling with everything else.
